Accessing Face-to-Face GP Services Through DVA for Veterans

For many Australian veterans, a regular general practitioner (GP) is the first point of contact for physical and mental health care. The Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) funds GP services for eligible veterans. Booking a veteran GP appointment face to face is usually simple once you understand how the system works.

In-person visits let your GP examine you properly, check vital signs and notice changes that are easy to miss over the phone. Telehealth has its place. Even so, a face-to-face veteran GP consultation remains the standard for thorough assessment, particularly for complex or long-term conditions.

This guide explains who is eligible, how to find a suitable doctor and what to expect when you see a veteran GP face to face.

Check Your Eligibility

Your DVA Veteran Card determines what GP care is covered.

  • Gold Card: Covers all clinically necessary treatment for any health condition.
  • White Card: Covers treatment for accepted service-related conditions. It also covers mental health care and certain other conditions, such as cancer, without the need to prove a link to service.
  • Orange Card: Covers pharmaceuticals only. It does not cover GP visits.

If you have completed at least one day of continuous full-time service in the Australian Defence Force (ADF), you can access a White Card for mental health treatment. Call DVA on 1800 VETERAN (1800 838 372) to confirm what your card covers.

Find a GP Who Accepts DVA Cards

Most GPs across Australia treat DVA cardholders. When you call to book:

  • Tell reception you hold a DVA Veteran Card
  • Confirm the practice bills DVA directly
  • Ask for a longer appointment if you have several issues to discuss

GPs bill DVA directly for covered services, so you should not pay anything out of pocket. If a practice asks for a gap payment, clarify the charge before you agree.

What to Expect at Your Appointment

Bring your Veteran Card, a current list of medications and any relevant medical records. During the visit, your GP may:

  • Review your medical and service history
  • Conduct a physical examination
  • Order blood tests, imaging or other investigations
  • Refer you to specialists or allied health providers

If you have left the ADF, you can access a comprehensive Veteran Health Check each year for the first five years after transition. A one-off check is also available at any time after that. These checks cover physical health, mental health and general wellbeing.

Eligible cardholders with chronic conditions may also qualify for Coordinated Veteran’s Care. Under this arrangement, your GP and a care coordinator manage your ongoing treatment plan.

Getting to Your Appointment

DVA can help with travel costs for approved treatment. Eligible cardholders may use the Booked Car with Driver service to attend appointments. If you live in a rural or remote area, you may claim travel expenses when the nearest suitable provider is a long distance away. Check eligibility with DVA before you travel.

Why In-Person Care Matters

Veterans experience higher rates of musculoskeletal injuries, hearing loss, chronic pain and mental health conditions. Regular in-person visits help your GP spot early warning signs and track changes over time. Seeing the same doctor also builds trust, which makes it easier to raise sensitive concerns.

Do not wait until a problem becomes urgent. Book a check-up, keep your records up to date and use the GP services your card provides.
